how are DOA mainstream, i do not see them selling out arenas, playing on award shows, hanging out with celebrities... Black Flag, Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys... when was the last time you saw them on any major network or american idol?

they are not mainstream, we are just in a time where it has become mainstream to like the underground.

NOFX maybe, had more a mainstream appeal. But that was due to their hard work, and commitment to everything, they didn't just start out on MTV... they just got lucky and MTV played them.

On top of that they did it all on a small label, not on a major...

Vocal style doesn't always determine the musical style. If you had a classical backing track and an electronic backing track and put the same style vocals on both of them it doesn't mean that the two songs are both the same musical style.

Also Robert Smith didn't always stick to the same vocal style, note the difference between these two songs:

I don't think I said it always did. It has a tendency with SOME singers though to influence the kind of melodies they do and make them relatively similar if not always then very often through their albums. I have said in a few places I like Lovecats, it has a very individual melody but I don't find that with enough of their music for my taste.

There's a position in popular music called The Punching Bag. Right now Nickelback holds that title. Late 90's, early 00's, Creed had the position. They were an average post grunge band that had Christian themes on some of their albums. Nothing more, nothing less.

I don't remember Razorblade Suitcase sounding much like the Fall, but its been a long time since I've listened to the Fall to make that comparison. FTW Razorblade Suitcase was the only album they did that was remotely listenable.
