Only if you a) know what you're doing and b) the suicidal person has access to reason. That's a decision best left to the arresting officer. Yes, in the movies, the bad ass cop always is able to talk the guy down (while saving a burning school bus full of children) but in reality we each have to make judgments according to our ability and the accessibility of the situation. There are people that, when they go crazy, are not going to listen to reason or pandering.

Actually, if you really want to get technical, he punched a police officer. That is reason enough to put him into handcuffs. However, military law and civilian law both provide the limits within handling these types of situations. At this point, reasonably talking to him was out of the question. This has been going on for a few months, and he informed of his plan of how he was going to do so, and attempted to test his theory out. He did this by putting a belt around his neck and tightening it. And, as he was on military property at the time, and he's a US Army soldier, I'm well within my limits.

So please define "innocent".

Innocent is neither here nor there. Guy was suicidal right? Ok well if he wants to do it, he will and he won't get arrested in the process next time.

I just don't think it's anyone's place to physically stop someone else from ending their own life, and using your authority as an officer of the law to cuff him is something I can't get behind. I can respect that you're the type of person who takes action against things you believe are wrong, we just have differing opinions about the topic. I can't get behind telling people what they can and can not do to themselves, their body, their life, their choice.

In general, yeah, I agree that people have the right to be able to decide what to do with their own life, but if my loved ones knew I was planning to commit suicide, and they just told me that they respect my decision, I'd wonder if they weren't just being callous and indifferent. It's supposed to be hard being objective when it's someone you care about.
