In June of '91, I was manager of a local record store.
One day, a rep for Polygram Records came in as she
would normally do on occasion. I was walking from
the back of the room up to the front counter, and
she said, "Maybe you might be interested?"

In short, she couldn't find anyone at any of the stores
that she visited who were interested in having dinner
with David Thomas.

I said, "Really? You couldn't find anyone?"
"Nope. They just give me a blank stare when I ask."
"Hell, yes, I'll do it."

I'd been a Pere Ubu fan for something like a dozen years.
First time seeing them at Gaspar's in Chicago in '78.
This Dallas show would be the "Worlds In Collision" tour.

Anyway, we sat for a couple of hours in a Thai restaurant
("Toy's Cafe") and had quirky convos about music and art.
That memory will always be with me. Sorry that he was
unwell for so long and it resulted in this.

Missed those rostasi stories. Nice to see you around.

Heard them live twice in Canada, each time was great.

I listened to a long interview with him on YT where he says his favorite PU album is New Picnic Time, which sounds like it was made by a "divinely inspired" band. I think that what artists say about their back catalogues often sounds off to fans, but this I agree with 100%. Much as I love the first two and some other PE records, this is the one for me.

Pere Ubu got tons of late night love on our college station in the late '70's. Akron/Cleveland had it going on with The Dead Boys, Tin Huey, DEVO, Hammer Damage, Chi Pig, Rubber City Rebels, Bizarros and The Waitresses.
