I'm sure you could make it competitive since even the guidebooks explicitly state that their rules are to be ignored if that's how your group wants to play but it is not a competitive game. It's a cooperative game. The person hosting a game is the one who plays as any enemies and the actual players are all in a party. There's a storyline decided by the host who reveals it as the players make their way through and there will be some end point, but there isn't some predetermined victory condition like a board game cause D&D isn't a board game. It's a roleplaying game.

I can sometimes tell (and I have a pretty good gaydar) but I had no idea either.

Being trans does not equal being gay, there's no such thing as a trans-radar.

And the answer is no, lol, you cannot tell someone's gender identity just by looking at them. That's the whole point of rejecting the gender binary. How someone presents outwardly doesn't indicate how they identify internally. It was not a real question.
