Hahaha chavs..

I understand where your coming from, theres some pretty atrocious chick flicks out there. But at the same time, theres some where the director got it just right. For instance Love Actually, I think Richard Curtis balanced the story between romance and humour perfectly. Then theres quite a few old Hugh Grant films that arent too bad.

Brutal pieces are good, but theyre, well, brutal. Sometimes you need something light and frothy to take you off of them. But good romance movies have substance, like 500 Days of Summer. When I first saw that I was expecting a cheesy chick flick, but instead I got a whole lot of insight into your average not-fully-requited love story. Not all chick flicks are cliche and fake, just about 98%.

I think Richard Curtis is fucking terrible as is Hugh Grant. 500 Days of Summer made it clear what type of film it was from the start, that can't be classed as a chick flick in any way. References involving music, and it has a very brutal side to it. The less glamorised way of looking at love, the two don't get married and live happily ever after, they run their race and they move on to other people. Love Actually is terrible as a piece of work, but it's just one you can switch your brain off and watch. That's why I dislike chick flicks, when I watch a film I want a tense cinematic experience. I think there's a difference between having romance in a film and it being a chick flick, romance is good as look as it doesn't become JUST about the romance and the romance being all hearts and butterflies, if it's real - I'll buy it. Chick flicks just aren't real.

I think you'll find (500) Days of Summer is classed as a chick flick though. Some female friends of mine went to see it when it first came out, but my guy friends refused to go, saying it was one of those 'girly movies'.

I like Richard Curtis, and I dont mind Hugh Grant. I dont see why you always have to feel and grasp the 'tense cinematic experience' of a movie - cant you just enjoy it? I like plenty of movies that dont have any intense and worthy plot for existing, I just like them because they make me smile.

Of course chick flicks arent real, and theyre obviously far-fetched and cheesy, but sometimes its good to take a break and just enjoy a movie you dont have to analize in your brain the entire time.

Romantic/Drama/Comedy, it's far from a chick flick. I thought it was going to be a light hearted chick flick at first, so I can see why your guy friends said that. But when I watched it, it didn't have those horrible clichés and the typical set up of a chick flick. It made light of them if anything, the karaoke scene singing Train in Vain. far from a chick flick, chick flicks are what they are. 500 Days of Summer explored things much more deeper than boy meets girl and all of that bollocks, it explored fate, it showed how things can collapse and change. It showed things people can relate to, chick flicks show things people want to relate to. To me, 500DOS is far from a chick flick, just the same as Titanic - it shouldn't be classed as a chick flick even though it is.

I like some that are quite light hearted, The Full Monty for example... but they have to be well made. Richard Curtis is terrible.

I swear, you put more thought into the movie than the director does

Mainstream media classes them as chick flicks, so thats how the world sees them. Then if you actually take the time to see the movie for yourself, you realise its not your typical chick flick, but instead has much more substance and depth of character, storyline and issues. Their relationship isnt fairytale, but at the end of the day, its still a relationship. And that what the movie centers on. Therefore, making it a chick flick. Titanic is a romantic drama, but seeing as for years its basically been the mother of all romance films, it is now viewed as a chick flick.

I dont think I've ever seen The Full Monty, but Richard Curtis is not terrible. His early stuff (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones) is really rather enjoyable.

It had a non-linear plot, an unusual structure, references to music, a great sense of gloom around it. Something that's not seen in chick flicks. But in people's mind sets it's got a boy meets girl - so it's a Romance. It's got Comedy.. so it's a Rom-Com? No, it's well off the mark. Having relationships in films doesn't make it a chick flick, having love in films doesn't make it a chick flick. You can have them two things in film. Relationships are the main thing surrounding a film, lots of films have boy and girl who are in love. Edward Scissorhands = boy meets girl, they had great affection for each other. You can tell when you see a chick flick, 500DOS wasn't that IMO.

Watch The Full Monty. Don't ask questions, just do it! Richard Curtis makes films for women. Horrible director.

Except in Edward Scissorhands the romance is more of a subplot, while in 500 Days of Summer the romance is the point of the movie. Having relationships in movies doesnt necessarily meen its a romance, but 500DOS doesnt have any other storylines going for it apart from their relationship (and if it does it just means that I havent seen it in a while and should probably watch it again). Its a romance, labelled chick flick. Wheres the drama in it?

I never said Richard Curtis was a good director, only that I liked his films. Cant say I've ever spent much time analysing the cinematography, but if you just 'switch off' and watch them, you might find your being a bit harsh on them.

The drama is when Zooey decides to be a fucking hoe and ruins Joseph's life. The struggle he faces moving on and getting his life together, just because it's a boy meets girl and there's romance doesn't make it a chick flick. If it was a bromance it'd just be a comedy-drama but because it's boy and girl, it's a romance-comedy-drama. I can accept it's that way inclined, but it isn't a chick flick. It's too real, find me 'another' chick flick that's as real as 500DOS. The Notebook is another film that can really f*ck off as well. That and PS I Love You. Urgh.

I can't stand cliché chick flicks like Bridget Jones. Running out into the street where it's snowing and kiss passionately.. give me a break.

One day, I will. I'll find one and I'll let you know. But let it be said, that although it sounds like it, I'm not really that big into chick flicks. The only ones I dont mind are the old Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks ones like Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally. I agree, The Notebook is possibly one of the worst stories/movies I have ever seen in my life. Aswell as P.S. I Love You. I've never seen it but I started reading the book. It was so pathetic I stopped before I'd even finished the first chapter.

Look past the cheesy kiss in the snow. Its a humourous movie, with witty lines and a charismatic heroine. The romance appeals more to girls, true, but if you get over its corny love story, you might be able to have a laugh.

Weird. I liked When Harry Met Sally for what it was, but I'd rather put my balls in a mangle than watch a Richard Curtis film.

When Harry Met Sally explored an idea I liked. I think if a film does that, it's a plus for me. 500DOS - exploring fate and whether things are meant to be. When Harry Met Sally - men and women, can they really be friends?
