I'd rather stick my **** in a blender than play multiplayer anyways, but thanks for the heads up.

I've also heard that the gameplay has been tweaked a little bit to evoke a feeling of other survival horror games where you have to manage your resources a little more thoroughly, i.e. not kill every living (or unliving) thing you see. I will eventually get Red Dead Redemption and maybe even Undead Nightmare, but in the meantime I've been playing:

Resident Evil 5, Gears of War 2, and I just got Battlefield: Bad Company 2 from Gamefly in the mail today. So far first thoughts on the first two:

Resident Evil 5 feels weird playing it on an Xbox controller, for some reason I have been having some controller issues that has made the game a little bit more challenging, but I'm sure that will pass with enough time. It's pretty nice on a graphics level and not much has changed from Resident Evil 4's except for the god awful inventory system. I definitely miss the attache case from Resident Evil 4 but seeing as how every reviewer has brought up the inventory system in their critiques I won't beat a dead horse.

Gears of War 2 is pretty much what I expected, still heavily reliant on the cover based combat, even though at times it seems questionable, at least on a lower difficulty. I actually restarted the game and changed it to a harder difficulty so I could make the most out of the cover based combat gameplay. I do like the addition of being able to use downed locust members as shields, but I have yet to engage in a chainsaw duel, which was one of the gameplay mechanics highlighted in the previews. The general feel of GoW2 feels pretty unchanged but I suppose why fuck with something that proved to be very popular in the past, I mean just look at the God of War series for evidence of that. I have to say I really enjoyed the worm chapter and it's definitely a game I would go back to play for shits and giggles, definitely $15 well spent.

Now time to get some homework done so I can enjoy Battlefield Bad Company 2 this week while devoting equal amount of time for finals.

You're going to dig BC2.
Single best thing about that game (in both story mode and online) is the destructible structures. Pretty much everything is destructible, and that makes for some very creative (and realistic) tactics.
I love playing through the single player campaign, and can do it repeatedly, but it's a little too easy (regardless of difficulty settings). There are only 2 parts of the game where it's actually difficult. (You'll know what I'm talking about when you get there) The only thing single player lacks is that your enemies are static and run tracks. For a real challenge, you have to play online. It's the only way you're not walking into a situation you're not sure of besides the first single player campaign you do.
Same goes for any game like that, I suppose. Of course, you already know that. But I do think that if you're going to do any online play at all, BC2 lends a lot to teamwork and strategy and has a better payout for people who don't simply want to run around and kill people, /main objective.

Ah you should tell me how the expasion is. I haven't played the game in about a year, but it still interests me. That game is so addicting that I still get random withdrawals. Sad

debaserr 12-07-2010 08:19 PM

the goblin starter area is the best pve i've played in the game. had a real blast doing it. makes me want to make another goblin. i've only been playing my new warrior so I haven't the foggiest idea about end game or new areas.

I just got WoW, Burning Crusade and WOTLC in the mail today, ordered them when Blizzard was giving that crazy sale. I think my life has taken a turn for the worse but oh well. I'm considering waiting till Cataclysm to start cause I really want to make a goblin... would you say it's worth it?

Seltzer 12-07-2010 09:53 PM

Yay, I finally chalked up the money to buy BF BC2! I may not eat for a week or two but it's so worth it. Haha, I'm not sure you guys will be seeing that much of me for a while :D

my favorite horde class for sure. I wish I could make a worgen but everyone I know plays horde. you could pay for a race change after you hit 80 but that costs $25...

your best bet is probably to just get cata now. what class are you making? do you have prior experience with the game? what are you going to do end-game?

noise 12-07-2010 11:23 PM

I can't decide what to play next :(

Here are my options:

I'm glad I never got into WoW, I'm sure I'd be addicted as sh*t to it.

Kirby 12-08-2010 01:48 AM

I played WoW for a couple hours, and figured it wasn't for me.

It takes a great deal to stop playing. I had two relapses, but I'm finally off.

Dirty 12-08-2010 12:54 PM

I'm not much of a gamer, but WoW always just seemed stupid to me. Like raids and trolls or wizards.. I dont evne know what its really all about but it just seemed too weird for me to try.

Plus most the people that I know who play WoW play constantly. Like if their WoW account was deleted, they would literally have no life

I think I'm going to ask for Cata for Christmas, as all my friends are going to be playing in January. They're all going alliance unfortunately so I might make a Worgen of some kind... possibly a druid. And no I have not played before, but I have played RPGs and talked quite a lot with friends who have played, so I think I have a basic idea of what's going on. If I make a goblin (maybe as an alt to play on my own) I'm considering shaman. Or just classic warrior.

A mix between Strategy and Action/Adventure.
It's a nice mix, too.

I still think Jack Black is one of the coolest people ever born.

It was hard at first, but then I got used to it.
I'm playing on Brutal difficulty and haven't really died much in the later portion of the game.

Well theres a few reasons why.

1. The starting zones are going to be flooded with newb trash hogging mods and resources who'll level them to 15-20 and thats it.

2. Bugs will be worked out. Right now theres going to be a lot of change going on. Wait till its far more stable.

3. At the beginning of Wrath, I decided to change from my then main (lock) to another toon, none of which were close to level cap. Because of that, I got to 80 when my guild was hitting Ulduar. Suffice it to say, no one was interested in Naxx.

4. When BC came out I would be in groups where I was the only non-BE. In Wrath I was usually grouped with two or 3 DK's. New is always disgustingly fashionable. Give it a month before you start, don't make them your main until your capped, or pay for a race change. Theres just no real reason, especially early, to go playing a race that offers little more than optics to the same old class.

Whats your faction and main?

I started playing my goblin war at 3:01am EST. I had no problems whatsoever with people getting in the way. much of it is instanced and there are quick respawns.

I haven't run into any discernable bugs not related to my mods.

meh, it's kinda just how it goes.

you should just pick whichever race you want.

This is my first time playing, so I don't really have a faction or a main. I'd say I prefer Horde in general, but I think I'm going alliance this time to be able to play with my friends. I don't really have a strong preference either way. The goblin just looks so coool.

I'm thinking of going just a standard sort of weapons based class the first time around. Maybe a human paladin... is there anything you'd recommend?

TheBig3 12-10-2010 07:08 PM

That depends on what you like doing in these sorts of games. The life of a DPSer is occasionally boring (waiting for queue times) but you're not going to be responsible for other people if you do.

As a paladin you're likely wanting to play Retribution, but other folks are almost always going to want you to heal. As a new player, you don't want your main to be forced to heal. Tanks are highly responsible too which paladins can also do.

As I said, a Pure DPS class can wait in longer queues but you won't be forced to do anything but attack. The 4 pures are: Hunters, Rogues, Warlocks, Mage's.

If you're looking for a straight up weapons class, try rogue.

If you're on your own (I see you are), then I'd recommend hunter. They're great at soloing, a lot of fun to play and can do okay end game dps when played right. Worgens can also be hunters and have a nice +crit racial ability if you think that matters.

When you get feats, go beast master as this spec is best for soloing. Then, when you hit level 30, get a dual spec into marksmanship or survival to do more damage in groups. I'd suggest survival!

TheBig3 12-10-2010 09:34 PM

Actually they nerfed the **** out of the hunters, as of Mid-November (when I stopped playing). They've also switched them over to Focus as a resource instead of mana.

My main is a hunter and I've no complaints really. Feels like Beast Mastery specced hunters do crappier dps in groups now, but dual speccing into survival helps with that. The class is even better at soloing than it used to be and it's more fun to play now. F.ex you can swap between pets without going to the stable master.

I wanted to play Cata so I came back to the game a while ago and have liked the changes .. Pre-ordered Cata from play.com which was a big mistake though :p: I still haven't got it.

TheBig3 12-11-2010 07:37 AM

You know they have a DL you had access to as of the 7th.

I should be back in next month. What server are you fools on?

Yeah, but I was stupid enough to think that pre-ordering something means you get it in time before it is released so that I'd have Cata the moment the server came up. Naive, I know. It's in the mail, so I can't be arsed buying the digital version as I'd have to return the one I get if I want my money back.

I'm guessing the cata playfields are full anyways.

edit :

EU : Bloodhoof :)

TheBig3 12-11-2010 09:08 AM

A European Server, oooooooo now we're never going to get to play together.

When did you stop playing if I can ask? Wrath was probably the low point of the game so it sounds like you missed the worst of the worst.

Guybrush 12-11-2010 09:14 AM

I was on beta servers before release, then stopped playing in summer 2005. Then I came back to check out Wrath not too long ago, so my main is 80. :)

I liked wrath better than burning crusade actually!

TheBig3 12-11-2010 09:20 AM

What? BC was probably the best of the WoW family thus far.

When wrath shipped the DK's were vastly overpowered, even the Dev's acknowledged that. They screwed up the raids and the near constant hInstances were a soul kill.

I'm pumped for Cataclysm but I need to get a new comp :(

debaserr 12-11-2010 09:59 AM

I'm on Magtheridon US.

TheBig3 12-11-2010 10:06 AM

Hm.... paladin actually sounds pretty good. I don't really mind tanking. Maybe I'll make a human paladin for play with friends, and some sort of goblin dps-based class for solo play? They can be all four of those, and I just like the look of em.

I'm actually not going to be on my own, as I have some friends that are starting to play around January. I'll probably be making an alt though which may get more play then my other character, as this group of friends is pretty hard to get together. Even online. I'll definitely consider hunter for that character, though I'm not really a huge fan of pets.
