Most of the big old school platformers were from Nintendo, Sega, Konami, Capcom and other companies that are still around.

and it's not like Capcom has done anything besides rehash their IP since about 1991.
That's really only been the case for Street Fighter and a few of the Resident Evil games. Mega Man has a lot of games but they have been more along the lines of spinoffs than rehashes, Mega Man 9 was the first traditional Mega Man platformer in a really long time.

Capcom still has a lot of new original licenses like Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Okami and Dead Rising so it's very very wrong to say they haven't done anything original since 1991.

Majesco owns A Boy and His Blob and can't turn a profit regardless of how awesome its games are so it's not really a stretch for them to redo what sold marginally well, gained a cult following, and doesn't really need to be rebuilt from the ground up, just repainted.
I have my fingers crossed for a new Kid Icarus game. A new Ristar or Alex Kidd would kick ass too.

dude i've been hoping for a new Kid Icarus since the first time i tried Metroid:Prime. seeing Pit in the last Smash Brothers has me hoping against hope that N might actual do something worthwhile with this IP. so far it's not looking like it's going to happen.

After now completing New Super Mario Bros Wii, I can safely say that it is my game of the year and a solid addition to the series. My worries that the single player experience would be a disappointment go unfounded as I found it to be both challenging and ingenious. The level design is fun and extremely entertaining/frustrating, just like every other great Mario game! When you introduce more than one player it does get a little too chaotic, but as long as you're in a good mood and not determined to complete the game with your friends then you should have a pile of fun.

still enjoying Left 4 Dead 2. there's something thereputic about eviscerating flaming zombies with a chainsaw, or beating them to death with a cricket bat.

On single player it's the easiest Mario game I've ever played, I bought this game 3 days ago and I've already made it to Bowser's castle. I dunno if it's that easy for everyone. Maybe I'm just the Mario master.

Being a total completionist though, collecting all the star coins, rescuing all the toads and finding all the secret routes may prove more challenging. Also, while this game can be beaten quickly, like any Mario game, the replay value is very high.

Multiplayer brings the challenge up to a considerable level, especially when you're playing with people of lesser skill or people who just want to sabotage you.

I haven't tried the battle mode yet.

I love the multiplayer but it's certainly gonna be tough as sh*t if you want to beat the game that way. We never got past world 2 on multiplayer.

But as great as the multiplayer is, the single player is the best. There's nothing holding you back and a big part of Mario is choosing weither to explore and collect goodies or zip through a level really fast. It's easy difficulty might turn off more hardcore players, but most Mario games after the NES trilogy have been pretty easy (Sunshine aside). It's easy because it's targeted towards people of all ages, and if you say you didn't have fun with this game you're lying.

This is pretty much the Wii GOTY, and yet another classic for the Mario series.

I'd love to play NSMBW... I just need a Wii first. Fancy that.

Game-wise I'm playing Tekken 6 (PSP), and well, I kind of preferred the last PSP Tekken... this game has a really overpowered sub and main boss.

Don't feel too bad man. I went through 5 or 6 of them before I made the switch to Ps3

Dragon Age is awesome but the combat can be rough. i'm getting seriously roughed up by a corrupted spider queen at the moment. tried a half dozen times tonight.
I just finished Dragon Age and now I want an expansion! While I don't think it eclipses the BG series, in my mind it stands up to its title as the spiritual successor. The story is immersive, the characters have personality, the quests aren't bad but could be a little more varied and the sparse puzzles are good. I think the best thing about it (even better than BG) is the balance. I like that they didn't dumb it down and I like that it's challenging enough to the point that I have to think about tactics in combat and spells/abilities aren't just redundant periodic rewards... they really affect your gameplay/tactics.

That spider queen battle was pretty brutal - I think I had to lower the difficulty for that one. I played through the game with my main char as a dual weapon warrior, Alistair with sword/shield, Leliana with dual weapons and Morrigan. I regret not enchanting my weapons until the end of the game.

As for Morrigan's spells, I found crowd control to be crucial and these are the ones I made use of:

* Cone of Cold / Crushing Prison - a good combo since the former works on pretty much every foe in the game and crushing prison shatters a lot of them.
* Force Field - essential for taking a particular strong enemy out of action for a bit while you hack its minions to bits. Good for incapacitating mages at the back of a mob too.
* Misdirection/Death Hex - I didn't use these as much as I should have, but they're quite brutal
* Sleep / Waking Horror - wreaks mayhem
* Blizzard - awesome for large numbers of enemies and you can cast it on a mob from outside their room if you're feeling cheap.
* Heal / Group Heal - the former is indispensable and the latter requires you to choose a spirit healer specialisation but it's definitely worth it, especially if the Heal cooldown is causing problems
* Mind Blast - the stun period is very short but it's a good oh **** button if your tank is surrounded by enemies and is one shot from death.

So in summary, plenty of CC, an elemental line, a healing spell or two and some ruthless hexes. I would like to have tried the paralyse and chain lightning spells too. Warrior riposte and rogue dirty fighting are also great for boss CC.

And this must be nerdiest post I've ever made.

I found a free Mega Man II Lite application for the iPhone so I downloaded that for my time in the airport tomorrow. You ever wonder how to make the game even harder? Take away the control and put it on a tiny screen with a touch screen.
