Definitely a great start to this, and like the others I will definitely be following it closely.

I think the U.S. should definitely take a look at outlawing "emoness."

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this!

I agree with the 1st 2 things in the "Weird place to be in" part though, that boxers showing thing...kinda irks me =| lol

And what the wtf do you mean your mom threw away your pokemon cards! I am saddened and... slightly appalled -_-

And speaking of which... I am actually 'Suess'iding right now! Oh and I do like the last song you mentioned as well!

Well thank you all, glad you took the time to read through all that !

I kind of made these two sections in the middle just to share the boxer, anti-emo news, and of course the Pokemon cards throwing (I still can't believe that happened!). Tho I'm sure, there's a lot of other news to come.

I'm thinking of naming that final section, officially "Seuss'iding ... ". We'll see at my next entry, that should be in the few days to come.

Overall great review Melissa, I especially loved the personal parts like your Pokemon cards (I totally watched that before work the other day, I had to tear myself from the TV actually ) and the Emo news I found funny Brilliant review though!

Oddly enough, I've actually heard of Fairouz before. I think it must have been on one of my many blog-surfs, on RYM or something like that. I definitely like what little I've heard though, so I reckon I'll hunt a link or two down someday.

It's been said before, but I'll say it again anyway - great start

Well we try to give our best
Btw Bulldog, I think I sent you one of her albums last week with a link. If you need any recommendations, between her many albums, I think I can dig up something somewhere.

Now as boredom leads us, I'm going to continue with the thread.

I- My beginnings in music 2.0

I talked about Fairuz with the first music I heard in my childhood, when I was about 6 years old. So let's return in time to see what happened next.
When I was 8, we would go every Sunday of the winter, skiing in the white mountains. A trip to the mountain would take a minimum of one hour, an hour that was used to listen to French music, to the Variété Française to be specific. My father is a fan of the routine concept, so it was the same music that we were obliged to listen to while driving the 3000 m of altitude. Tho I feel that this kind of music is purely corny, I have to admit that I adored it then, and I still like to listen to it sometimes (as long as it's not in a karaoke night, that is usually filled with these kind of songs).
I still have some favorites, that I'm going to share here with you, but I got to clarify that this kind of music doesn't include the great French musicians like Brel, Gainsbourg or Piaf. I will mention them later, as I am progressing chronologically, but when talking about Variété Française, this term designates a specific group of cliché songs.

The first song is Pierre Bachelet's Elle est d'ailleurs (She's from faraway). One of the sweetest melodies in my opinion, to this day, with the first lyrics to ever catch my attention. I tried to translate it, but it got horribly corny in English, so here's what it's about:
A man, the narrator, describing this surreal creature of a woman, that has enslaved him from the first sight, and that doesn't even know he exists.
He then adds at the end of each verse "As for me, I'm sure she's from faraway".

Another very famous song, that I really like, specially for the lyrics. One of the few that has the intensity of the melody, added to the meaningful lyrics, instead of the usual "I love you, I need you, I miss you". It's Géant de Papier (Giant out of paper) by Jean Jacques Lafon.

trying to translate the lyrics roughly:

Ask me to fight the devil,
To go defeat the dragons of the void,
To build towers and cathedrals
On quick sand...
Ask me to break the mountains,
And to dive in the jaws of the volcano.
All seems feasible to me,
However ....

When I look at her,
Me, the wolf and man
with the heart of steel.
In front this body of a woman
I'm just giant made out of paper.

Third song, L'amour Cerise (The cherry love), whatever this means. Just one that kind of represent the typical simplistic French nostalgic melodies. Plus it is the reason I so fondly love the "Village Green" Kinks song, tho this one is made 15 years later, it just reminds me of my naive childhood days.

The next one, not one of my actual favorites, but it was one that always brought tears to my eyes, and it was 8 years later that I found out that it is actually is a cover of one of Fairuz's great songs. It's somehow different from the original song, so I still consider them like two separate ones (tho now listening to it, it is quite obvious that it's the same song, seems like I was some dumb kid).

Finally, just a couple of ones that I really like to listen to, but not much to describe or comment on them:

II- Weird place to be in

These last couple of days, I've been noticing it more and more, and it's really getting annoying, I don't know why: Drivers get dangerously angry when you stop them when they're breaking the law.

Like yesterday, trying to do a U-turn, when a guy that just weirdly feels that he has the priority to pass in front of me, blocks my way angrily. He gives a weird mute monologue (as the music was loud enough to not hear him) re-acting the whole situation, then just gives me the finger and continues.

Why the hell is a 60 year old giving me the finger?! Specially that it wasn't the _|_ classic version, but the inversed form of it. That was somehow disturbing.
*The same thing happened today ... I'm not loved on the road :/

III- In my life

Till I was 5, I wasn't able to either talk or understand Arabic, which is my mother language. I think that's why I have no language I truly am comfortable to talk in, making just "talking" difficult.

VI- Song(s) I'm digging

Not much has changed from the earlier part of that section, other than digging the two songs, I'm extremely digging the whole two albums:

Plus yesterday I found myself really liking this Costello track, I can honestly say, it's one of the best tracks of My aim is true:

If there is one thing all drivers share whilst on the road, is a genuine disliking for one another, even if they don't like to admit it.

Keep up the good work.

Great little tune that, and a favourite of mine off of the debut as well. I've said quite a few times before around here that as good as My Aim Is True is, it's nowhere near his best in my opinion. Still great stuff though.

And, yeah, I remember Fairouz now I'll put those links to good use in a bit and get back to you about them.

^^ Echo what Bulldogg says of it being a good track, just not the part where it is not his favourite album. My Aim Is True takes the cake for me, most probably because it was the first album of his I had/heard, and maybe because of "Mystery Dance," so different to anything else he did. Long live the Kinks too.

Cool journal
