We agreed in the other thread the definition of the word was not relevant to the debate. Shove off :D

Well, now that the definition is official, I think it's become a bit more relevant.

Fifa scandal: President Sepp Blatter resigns - BBC News

Thoughts on this? I wasn't going to post it in here, but this is a genuine world news story, and I can't believe it. Anyone who would have viewed it in the sports forum will see it here anyway.

Kurdish fighters take Kobani, Syria - CNN.com

Quote:

Kurdish fighters have taken the Syrian city of Kobani from ISIS' grip after 112 days of fighting with the Sunni extremist group, multiple sources said Monday.
Just heard about this on NPR, and apparently this town is a major ISIS hub for bringing in foreign fighters from Turkey, Europe, and all over the world, along with bringing in supplies and sending out oil. It's also within spitting distance of Raqqa, ISIS' capital in Syria. So this is big ****.

But my real reason for posting this, is that I ♥ the Kurds. They were the most effective and badass fighters in Iraq, when our US-trained Iraqi soldiers were either deserting or just being useless in general, and now they're beating ISIS like a redheaded step-child? **** the Arabs, let's just give the Middle East to the Kurds, and then watch let them lock that **** down in a week.

Ahmadinejad wants to cause trouble? I think the Kurds might have something to say about that. Problem solved.

And as far as I know, they've never been bombed by the Israelis, so if we can have them both make nice, we can sit back and watch the new Kurdish Empire usher in a new Golden Age in the Middle East.

I'm not delusional, I'm strategically naive.

Exo 06-19-2015 02:21 PM

I am excited by this. I wasn't a huge fan of his last two films, but if it's anywhere even remotely close to the genius that is Brazil, I'm sure I'm going to love it. Don Quixote is such a looney story that I can only see Gilliam tackling this. It's his perfect project.

Frownland 06-19-2015 02:23 PM

It's almost like Cervantes wrote the novel specifically for Gilliam (would have been cool to see Jodorowsky try it out though).

Crazy Scottish Mother****er Plays Bagpipes Up and Down the Beach on D-Day

Quote:

Once ashore Millin did not run, but walked up and down the beach, blasting out a series of tunes. After "Hieland Laddie", Lovat, the commander of 1st Special Service Brigade (1 SSB), raised his voice above the crackle of gunfire and the crump of mortar, and asked for another. Millin strode up and down the water’s edge playing "The Road to the Isles".

Bodies of the fallen were drifting to and fro in the surf. Soldiers were trying to dig in and, when they heard the pipes, many of them waved and cheered — although one came up to Millin and called him a “mad bastard”.
Quote:

Millin was surprised not to have been shot, and he mentioned this to some Germans who had been taken prisoner.

They said that they had not shot at him because they thought he had gone off his head.

I will never make fun of bagpipers again. Cause they'll probably eat my head.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news...nfederate-Flag

I'm no apologist for the Confederate flag nor do I have the full context to understand it. I don't think it should be flown on federal buildings but that's about as much compromise as I think is reasonable. Now I get that Apple is a privately owned business and I'm sure their Terms and Conditions that app developers agree to have a clause that allows Apple to take down offensive material, but this is just cynical headline grabbing "oh look at us, aren't we so progressive" bullshit that makes me sick. This isn't banning something that is actively trying to be offensive, this is banning something because they just don't like it, regardless of historical context, or really any context. It frightens me that younger generations, ones who are more likely to be opposed to censorship are so quick to throw every little thing under the bus in the name of some misguided attempt of social justice.

grindy 06-27-2015 04:17 PM

It's not the story I can't believe but how incredibly, immensely stupid the CNN people are. Or do they get it and just decided to go with it anyway?

Anti-Gay Jewish Group Hires Mexican Laborers To Protest NYC Pride Parade: Gothamist

Frownland 06-30-2015 05:33 PM

I heard about it on the radio and I thought that the radio host was making it up. Honestly it's everything a news story ever dreamed of having: corruption, Mexican laborers, anti-gay protests, Jews. It's beautiful, really.

My real worry with the legalization of gay marriage is the possible decline it may cause in glory hole usage.
