Sometimes less is more. With Louie Louie, the genius is in the simplicity.
Richard Berry penned one of the most important songs in Rock and Roll. Supposedly Metallica did the same with Master of Puppets but for Heavy Metal. Richard Berry gets probably little to no recognition for his contribution, while Metallica, with all the adulation they get from critics and fans alike, still go after their fans that so happen to use Napster... or whatever they did. Metallica, why don't you cry me a river on the way to the bank. Beside that the song, Louie Louie, spurned a FBI investigation which gives it more cool points than any song Metallica ever did.

More purchases is more listens, more listens is more chances to make an impact or influence someone who might aspire to become a musician. It also makes your record company more money, which is about the most tangible impact that I can think of.

another reason im surprised ppl never bring it up. i once heard Kevin smith say Prince has alot of unreleased music videos stored in his house. According to him they're fully shot videos that are finished but Prince for some reason just didn't release them.
