I listened to N'Sync for 2 years (age 8-10 or something like that).
Also I bought John Cena's album the first day it was out. |

Whenever people ask me of what music reminds me of my summer, this is it. It's not a 'secret' but it makes me feel weird when I say this one. People seem to think I'm crazy because of it. ... Poor power violence. |

I bought this album when I was 9 or 10.
http://images.uulyrics.com/cover/e/e...um-europop.jpg Not gonna lie, Blue is still a very catchy song |
I own the soundtrack to the Lizzie McGuire movie, and I still listen to it.
My first CD was Green Day's American Idiot. I love Spandau Ballet. ... and Annie Lennox, Pat Benetar and Cyndi Lauper. -shrug- |
What's wrong with Pat Benetar?
|
I don't own a single Led Zeppelin, Clapton, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, or Rolling Stones record and frankly I'm not motivated to fix any of that.

I own some Kidz Bop and a Hilary Duff album. But I was nine or something when I bought those, gimme a break.
I have listened to a band because they had homosexual members. So.... I do own Marilyn Mansons first record on vinyl. I went out of my way to get that....and I haven't even listened to it yet. (On vinyl, anyway.) It's possible that I like Tegan&Sara's demo tapes from when they were fifteen and on acid more than their current record, Sainthood. Oh, and I forgot, I kind of like Que Sera Sera by Doris Day. Ha |
forgive me father for i have sinned

It's not that I dislike them, I just don't have any motivation to check them out. My priorities are too screwed.

it was one thing for me and my peers to be checking out our parent's music, it's a whole other thing for teens today to STILL be checking out what is now their grandparent's music and being expected to worship it in the same way. |

I think its a trend to like 'vintage' and old stuff these days. |
That's because newer music sucks so bad.

people who like it because they like it? fine people who like it because they think they're supposed to? lame people who hate it because they checked it out and it made their ears bleed? fine people who hate it because they think everyone is supposed to like it and they want to show the world how different they are? lame i could go on but that pretty much covers most bases. as the gap widens between the era when the 'classic' style was first in prominence and when the contemporary listeners become the generation of choice within popular culture i think we'll see even more warped reasoning as to why people to chose to listen or ignore. |
I know it sounds like a generalization but I think "what is cool" has a big influence on the music and culture people associate themselves with. It's just not cool to like something your grandad probably loves and it's much more cool to write off everything from previous generations because it's not part of your generation.
Trash magazines like Alternate Press pretty much endorse this point of view, that it's hip to reject things because of the era they were made and the "square" people they appeal to. I'm sure in the 60s youngsters felt the same way about what their parents liked and what not and that it's a common youth thing. But I think we're at a stage in civilization where it shouldn't be so hard to rate something based on the actual quality of it and not the closedminded preconceptions you have about it. But most young people are stupid so what can ya do? |

That's not really based on a preconception it's just an observation.

Well it's a generalization to say newer music sucks I admit, but it's based on the fact that a great majority of modern music isn't to my liking.
No I don't think all modern music sucks, but do I think contemporary music is worse now than previous decades? Yes I do. What's so irrational about thinking (in terms of preference) that an artform can have a certain peak and go downhill from there? |

I thoroughly enjoy Hands Up.

When was the last time you actually picked up an album by a band you've not heard of & judged it on your own merits? I don't think I've ever seen you do it in the whole time you've been on this forum. |
Modern music doesn't suck at all. There's absolutely tons of great stuff out there, fresh for the listening, ready for your ears to devour. People's ears just need to be switched on. They need to ditch commercial radio almost entirely because that isn't doing anything new anymore, end of story. Go online. Hit up lastfm. Pandora, whatever other similar sites there are out there. You'll find gobs and gobs of awesome amazing stuff, all tailored to your very own tastes in most cases. The beauty is you get sort through it THINK FOR YOURSELF and tailor your own tastes and library accordingly.
It's actually a freaking great time to get into music, just get off your ass and quit being spoonfed a bunch of crap from an industry model that is dead or at least dying. As Peter Gabriel put it... 'The music industry is dead, but there's still plenty of interesting creatures crawling out of the carcass". |
Quote:
You're making a proconception about how I judge music just because I don't quite open up about everything regarding my tastes. Mostly as a defensive mechanism and also because discussing artists people haven't heard of tend to die fast. It doesn't mean I only like popular music. |
I used to think newer music was mostly bad until 2 things happened around the same time.
1) I started finding newer bands that were actually pretty good 2) Someone pointed out that the reason all the old stuff seemed so good was that the large majority of bad music released in the 60's-onward had been forgotten There will always be bad music, and some of it will always survive, but deciding an entire era is terrible is inaccurate. |
i catch myself singing the chorus-line to "telephone" by lady gaga
