I just got off the phone after about an hour of yelling at my mother for keeping wine in the same house that my brother lives in. He's a substance abuser and can go to jail if he tests positive for any substances (booze/heroin/crack/weed/ect...)

I talked to my brother earlier today. He told me that he sees my mother have a glass of wine every once in a while and even though he doesn't have an alcohol problem, it makes him want to have a glass of wine. I told my mother this and told her she needs to get rid of the wine. She fought me on it for an hour. Her point was that she deserves a glass of wine every once in a while, that it keeps her sane in that house. I told her to go out and have one with her friends, that it shouldn't be in the f*cking house. She said that she's discreet with it. I told her obviously not because my brother knows about it and it bothers him. I told her she's gambling with her sons freedom for a glass of wine and if it's that important, then maybe she has a problem. She says that it's not fair to her because she's an adult and has to deal with sh*t every day and deserves a glass of wine.

How selfish can you be? I mean, I love my mother. She's a wonderful person, perhaps even my favorite person, but this is horsesh*t. Or is it? I mean, I know people are human and have their moments, but I can't help but think this is just selfish behavior from somebody that is supposed to be helping my brother.

Am I overreacting?

She's in the wrong and seems to have rationalized her bad decision to the point of no return. I don't know anything about your brother apart from what you've shared on here, but it might be a good idea to have him tell her what he told you so she can see it firsthand (she might have thought you were making it up).

Yes. Don't punish your mom because of your brother. He ****ed up his life and you're giving him the right to be a burden on everyone around him. He needs to take some responsibility for his actions.

I was pretty upset when I wrote that. I shouldn't have attacked my mom like that. She deals with a lot of stuff and a glass of wine every other day is the only thing she has to get her through some days. I'm just deathly worried my brother is going to go back to jail because of something in the house.

I called her back and apologized. We agreed that she just needs to hide it better and she also admitted she has been having wine in front of him which is wrong.

Sometimes I catch myself envying people who don't have close relationships with their family. I love them so f*cking much that actually affects my depression because I just want them to do the right things and be happy. It's like I'm my parents parent.

Family is hard.

you should probably bring your family on the dr phil show. i'm pretty sure my mom would enjoy watching that while drinking a glass or 8 of wine.

Okay you mentioned that he was a substance abuser, and from what you said, I'm assuming drugs. Does he have a history of alcohol abuse? Was alcohol in the agreement with the prosecution/judge? The reason I'm asking is that in situations like that alcohol is a bit of a tricky part. Sometimes it is covered with the plea agreement sometimes it is not. Without knowing specifics of that situation, I can't say anything for sure, but it's hard for me to imagine him going to jail because of the wine being in the house.

Your mom should not have the wine in front of him, I'd agree, out with friends or whatever. The temptation is one thing, however, your brother is an adult (or close enough to it) he should have some self control and be able to take responsibility for his actions and be able to control the desire to have a drink. Ultimately, if he tests positive for something he shouldn't have, he's going to get arrested because it's very doubtful that someone forced him to. Yes, I do realize the in's and out's of addiction, but you know as well as I know that the cops would still arrest him.

Speaking of people being arrested I got dispatched to a domestic violence call on post, guy going to slam his girlfriend into a washing machine. **** like that makes my blood boil.
