video games have gone soft difficulty wise. could the next wii zelda have the remote chance of me dying please?

Laces Out Dan! 08-29-2010 02:37 PM

As of September 7th, my life goes on a standstill as NHL 11 is released.

yes and no. it depends on whether or not your playing an actual game or a more modern 'gaming experience'. The Legend of Zelda series (while awesome as all get out) is all about the experience.

you want to play a game that will kill you, get one of the Mega Man re-releases.

i suppose you could say a lot of online games are very difficult considering the competition. i agree zelda is more about the experience, but it could be a bit more exciting if you had a chance of dying. how hard would it be to implement a hard mode? all you would need are mobs that have more hp/do more dmg.

my original statements were more about single player modes. for most it is pretty difficult to die on normal setting.

Antonio 08-30-2010 06:55 PM

League of Evil

soooo much walljumping, plus the 3 star ratings for how fast you go will make you want to get into ninja mode when playing this.

debaserr 08-30-2010 07:43 PM

has anyone else seen stuff about the nintendo 3DS? they sure are fucking great at creating gaming novelties. something like that brings my inner nerd to the foreground and forces me to tread lightly as to not induce a impulse buy.

I'm hearing that.

As of November my life goes on a standstill as Gran Turismo 5 is released.

actually implementing a hard mode is quite a bit more challenging and a lot more work than just more mobs that have more hp / cause more damage. the big challenge in balancing a game is finding the point where the average player recognizes the challenge to be overcome YET, still feels like they have a chance of overcoming it through their own skill. on one hand 'more' can achieve it, but at the same time it can easily break it.

consider this simple example. in Zelda you start with 3 hearts, so you can basically take 5 hits before you die without healing. for this example lets say an average mob is 3 monsters that take 2 hits a piece to die. in this case the most efficient way through combat involves landing 6 hits while avoiding 14. now if we just make it harder by jacking up the monster stats, let's bring up the average mob damage to a full heart and 3 hits to die. now you need to land 9 hits, and avoid 18, and if they do double damage you can only be hit twice before you risk death.

so... hit 6 avoid 14 and absorb up to 5 (so avoid as little as 9), or hit 9 avoid 18 and absorb up to 2 (which still absolutely forces you to avoid 16). hardly the same level of challenge or balance anymore for what is essentially the same mob. it could be done, but would you get the feeling that you beat the mob because of skill or because of a lucky fluke?

a well designed game NEVER relies on a player's luck to win. another example... one of the challenges in Starcraft2 is to nuke X amount of enemy units within 90 seconds using a specific number of nukes. i got gold on that challenge by complete chance, there were 20 seconds left on the timer and i had like 3 nukes left so i just dropped them wherever. i have NO IDEA what those first 2 randomly splattered but it was enough to get the trophy. sense of accomplishment? not exactly. i just got lucky that a horde likely happened to patrol right into the path of a nuke.

as for single player modes and the 'normal' setting, well... if it has a difficulty set to normal then it's an option than can be changed and your complaint is actually entirely your own fault. switch that option already :p:

debaserr 08-31-2010 06:48 PM

it is all fairly irrelevant personally anyways. i have probably beat 3 games in the past 5 years(single player).

it's all good, i studied video games on a professional level and can't help going into too much detail on certain aspects of them.

zolhof 08-31-2010 08:11 PM

I play almost everyday Modern Warfare 2 and I'm trying to be I wanna be the fangame... worst game ever, but addicting as hell hehehe

Sparky 09-01-2010 12:46 AM

working my way through god of war collection on ps3.

The series is definetly overrated, but it does do scale and set pieces pretty well.

Just downloaded Ocarina of Time on the Wii Virtual Console! Right before school starts too... guess I won't be studying as much as I should be ;)

Word. The game is broken, laggy as hell, and most of the players are total c0cks, but I can't stop playing it.

BombTheMusicIndustry 09-04-2010 09:12 PM

Right now I'm playing Guitar hero 3 expert on Wii. I wish they would remake the other ones for the Wii like they did for Xbox 360.

debaserr 09-04-2010 09:33 PM

^ i agree. not sure why they never ported all of the games to all of the systems. the novelty has worn off now and they didn't maximize their money making potential. speaking of guitar hero, fuck the DLC. that is so ridiculously priced. i was really into guitar hero for a year or two but now it doesn't do much for me.

When you have Ocarina of Time, everything else become substandard ;)

what are you talking about? all the other GH titles that have come out since GH3 are already available for the wii and GH Smash Hits is the best of the first guitar only titles and expansions with support for other instruments.

Nine Black Poppies 09-09-2010 06:07 PM

I decided to play through Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II again.

So, um... the first one.

I like simple, addictive games and this suits me well. Top score only 73 ATM :( Still beating a few people I know though.

Kirby 09-09-2010 11:10 PM

Playing:
Soul Calibur 4 and Wet, mostly.

Waiting for...

Halo: Reach (Sept. 14)
Claptrap's New Robot Revolution (Borderlands Add-On) (Sept. 28th)
Fallout: New Vegas (October 19th)*
Super Meat Boy (October 20th)

* denotes that if this game were a female, I would make sweet, sweet love to it, and have a family of twenty kids.

Really? You're that excited about playing on an ancient game engine with really sub par graphics?

that's like complaining about a live lo-fi acoustic album because it isn't using all the newest studio wizardry possible.

RVCA 09-10-2010 11:19 AM

No, it's more like complaining about a band with the resources to use the latest and greatest instruments instead choosing to play on instruments from the 17th century.

that makes it different from the big resurgence of folk music how?

RVCA 09-10-2010 12:15 PM

The hardware. You can aim for a rustic feel without using rustic tools.

Sparky 09-10-2010 06:14 PM

Fallout 3 was amazing, i don't know what your talking about.

Damn straight.
Graphics don't make a game. Story and the fun you have is what makes a game.

Fallout 3 was one of, if not THE best, game that i've played in the last few years.

Freebase Dali 09-11-2010 01:07 AM

^ Likewise. Can't wait for New Vegas.

RVCA 09-11-2010 11:22 AM

I understand that making a pretty game should never be the focus, but that's not to say that the engine doesn't deserve an update.

Sparky 09-11-2010 12:39 PM

Making an entire engine and then making an entire game world the size of Fallout would take a really, really long time.

I'd rather they use the tools they got to come up with more interesting missions, dialogue or whatever.

Kirby 09-11-2010 07:12 PM

And Obsidian is making New Vegas. They made the original two Fallouts. I almost guarantee there will be more dark humor about this game than Fallout 3.

debaserr 09-12-2010 12:15 AM

just when i thought i was out... it's basically the only game i really like.

RVCA 09-12-2010 12:56 AM

REACH

.... well not yet. But I seriously can't wait.

TyrantSong 09-12-2010 09:06 AM

I'm swapping addictions between Plants V Zombies and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. Getting my fill of tower games and fighting games until Reach comes out.

Kirby 09-12-2010 10:15 AM

Every one of my friends that I ask what they're playing, give me the same answer.

"[game title here], but Im just wasting time until Reach."

RVCA 09-12-2010 11:33 AM

Exactly :-D
