Water On Rosetta's Comet Different To Water On Earth | IFLScience

Quote:

Now, the results are in, and it seems that cosmic snowballs are no longer the prime suspect. The water on Earth doesn’t match up with the water surrounding 67P, leading scientists to point the finger at another suspect: asteroids. However, some have argued that this conclusion is a little hasty, and that more data is needed before comets can be eliminated.

Not sure how seriously I'd take a science website that can't use prepositions correctly.

"Different To" should be "Different From". The most common mistake is "Different Than", and it's become somewhat accepted. "Different To" is really messed up. It's an interesting report and probably 100% reliable, but my BS detector goes off whenever a scientist makes an obvious grammatical error.

Zhanteimi 12-16-2014 06:32 AM

Agreed, but I've noticed the English say "different to".

DwnWthVwls 12-16-2014 09:57 AM

When someone says "different to" I just assume they are leaving out the word "compared".

Every time someone sneezes, North Korea calls it unprovoked germ warfare and threatens to attack.

the only way this story could be made better is if it turned out the homeless guy was one of those con artists that actually lives in a condo but just chooses to dress up in scruffy clothes and beg for a living.

Well, to be fair, from what I understand about the lip surgery thing, they always look ultra-swollen right after the operation. So, they very well may end up looking normal eventually.

There's this yuppietwat that I ****ing hate who sings and plays guitar at my train station. He wears expensive clothes, has a 2,000$ 12-string acoustic guitar, and tries very hard to be Bob Dylan. His guitar case is always filled with change and an impressive amount of dough and he sells CDs. I always figured at the end of the day he packs everything up, goes back to his ugly, blocky, bichromatic apartment complex and teaches some poor young sap how to play guitar like an asshole. I feel like that would make a good book- "How to Play Guitar Like an *******." The subtext would read "For those who don't really care and just want to look cool, impress girls, or have delusions about being the next big thing"

You should just sit cross-legged in front of him for like twenty minutes or so, staring at him, occasionally putting pennies in his guitar case.

you're making me start to resent a city i've never even been to.

John Wilkes Booth 12-18-2014 05:21 PM

when i lived in south florida there were so many homeless people. i guess cause its warm and they can survive out there without freezing to death. anyway they usually panhandled on the concrete mediums between intersections cause thats where people get stuck in traffic and they walk up to your window looking sad and homeless. and there were some real cases down there not like your nice shirt guy so it was kind of hard not to feel bad for them but it was like there were too many of them.. you would honestly go broke if you gave money to each one you saw.

so it was pretty competitive. and there were some who had gimmicks sorta. i know this is going to sound kind of ****ed up but the gimmick would be that they are missing a leg or an arm and they'd say vietnam vet and **** like that. then there were some who tried to make funny signs to stand out. there was one dude that my dad knew named kurt. he knew him through the sobriety program. he knew a lot of them that way. anyway one day kurt found a traveler's bag full of women's dresses. and for whatever reason kurt decided to wear these dresses while he panhandled. and he boosted up his profits pretty good by doing so. it's pretty ****ed up, i know. but it's true.

The amount of people running to help and showing support now is beautiful. One of my best mates' dad was involved in the Clutha last year and it was the same then. As sad as these tragedies are, really shows what makes this city great.

Fourth Jewish baby this year treated for herpes after controversial Orthodox circumsicion method | Daily Mail Online

I'm aware of this practice, but why this not illegal yet (circumcision that is, not the Jewish practice, but obviously that as well)

Zhanteimi 12-27-2014 01:07 AM

There's no reason for circumcision to be illegal. I just talked to a doctor two weeks ago who said circumcision is beneficial for one's partner, and it decreases your chances of contracting HIV.

I seem to remember that the benefits for preventing STDs are comparable to the danger of serious complications from the procedure. Which is to say, almost nil.

Don't see why it shouldn't be illegal when carried out those who can't consent

As far as I know, that second bit is true but it's so insignificant. HIV is a very, very difficult virus to contract anyway, some estimates reckon it's as low as 0.06% per contact. So it's hardly a convincing argument when we also consider that we have condoms.

No reason to do it unless it's for shit like phimosis imo.

Zhanteimi 12-27-2014 01:18 AM

We also bathe our babies for health's sake, despite their lack of consent.
