Oblivion's voice acting wasn't terrible per say, it was just funny that they apparently used all of 4 or 5 different voice actors for every character in the game. Kinda the same with Skyrim, which is a little disappointing

Mykonos 11-12-2011 06:35 PM

I feel pretty confident in saying it was terrible. Wes Johnson was excellent (STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM) and Jeff Baker (Haskill in Shivering Isles, and also the Dunmer in Morrowind) was great as always, but every single other voice actor in the game was either average or awful. Even Patrick Stewart, one of the most acclaimed actors currently alive, was completely awful. I think Bethesda have got some kind of vocal virus that makes their voice actors crap. In the Fallouts they made/published the wekk-known actors were pretty much terrible across the board.

Sparky 11-12-2011 07:11 PM

fallout had good voice acting. At least the radio personalities, especially in new vegas.

With Oblivion in particular, you can just play off the bat with no experience and wander doing whatever the hell you want for hours upon hours, with no true obligations or master beyond the map edges. Hehe, good description :D

Mykonos is right about the voice acting. It was absolutely horrible.

^And yeah, that's from the game. It was awful even when they weren't making mistakes like that.

Also Oblivion is one of those games that look good and bad at the same time. The environments and so on are generally good looking, but NPCs look like they've been randomized from the char gen (which I'm sure they had been) and sometimes, they just looked real stupid. Nothing's quite natural in the way people act. For example, if you sneak and become detected and re-hide, characters may come running after you and when they don't find you, they may stop and just stand upright with their arms straight down their sides, looking like they're totally oblivious to their surroundings.

Bethesda were never very good at stuff like that, I think. It's part of the charm, though :D The games are still awesome.

You mention wandering around for hours with no obligations as in its a good thing? I agree with Il Duce and find wandering around aimlessly a borefest really. I like a game that gives me principal and secondary tasks to do (not too linear) but still tasks to do as in I`m reaching an overall goal with interesting characters and locations etc. For example, I find mini missions such as helping a villager look for his lost son or wife boring, especially if there is an endless supply of these misssions (Zelda tends to get these type of mission spot on though) Somebody mentioned its similiarity to LOTR above, but of course LOTR always had a set task and was very focused.

The best roleplaying game I`ve ever played to date is still Final Fantasy VII and any game that can get me an experience like that.....

you can get a principal quest in Morrowind but you often get side-tracked with endless side-quests

if you like FFVII, you might like Grandia III, Dragonquest VIII and Rogue Galaxy

Mykonos 11-13-2011 04:35 AM

Well, you do have goals and things to do. It's not so prevalent in Elder Scrolls games which are more about dull, dull repetitive dungeon diving for locations, but the Fallout games are a good example of almost every location having something to do. I got a lot of fun out of exploring off the beaten path in Fallout 3 to find the imposing satellite towers to the North (which I'm pretty sure you'd miss if you played the game in a linear way).

yeah, the dungeon-crawling is a beeyatch - i jus spent most of my time collecting armour and weapons left by enemies for selling them for gold

The dungeons in Oblivion were very dull but they've been vastly improved in Skyrim. Apparently a lot of Oblivion was randomly generated, and everything in Skyrim is hand-crafted, and from personal experience so far, I can really tell the difference

Mykonos 11-13-2011 12:42 PM

If by randomly generated you mean quickly designed by the engine, no, it has all been hand-crafted since Morrowind. But the dungeons were all created by one designer who would likely have been driven to madness by having to keep dungeons original, especially when he had access to the same meshes for dungeon types and... You get the idea.

Ah FF7 remains a classic indeed even though it's now 15 years old.

If you haven't played Xenogears or Chrono Trigger/Cross, I highly recommend checking out those classics as well.

FF > Zelda. Yeah I said it :wavey:

Are you sure it's all hand crafted? I'm fairly certain I remember reading an interview with Todd Howard about how large swaths of Oblivion were randomly generated, and that only major quest areas and some of the bigger minor quest areas were custom made.

I know that was the case with II (aka Daggerfall) which explains how ridiculously large that map was, and I think that parts of Oblivion were also randomly generated as well. Skyrim's environments look a lot more dissimilar to me so far, so good news on that front.

Edit: Yep, parts of oblivion were randomly generated: http://kotaku.com/5858056/skyrim-wil...l-as-minecraft

hoof123 11-14-2011 07:41 AM

I thought Oblivion was really boring, but I'm really loving Skyrim. I think my attitude to playing it is different from what it was, I'm really settling into the world and my character and balancing side quests and the main missions more effectively than I did with Oblivion, so I constantly feel like I'm progressing and developing. Something that I just didn't get with Oblivion, which ultimately made me give up with it.

highoctane93 11-14-2011 08:40 AM

I think that was mostly due to two things:

1) The leveling system. Oblivion has one of the worst and most unsatisfying leveling systems I've ever seen.

2) The world scaling. It didn't matter if you were level 2 or level 20, enemies would scale in level with you so you never really felt overmatched, nor did you ever feel super powerful/strong.

Chrono Trigger is awesome, haven't played Cross

the Xenosaga series is also pretty good, though i think the plot's quite convuloted

Picked up Skyrim from Gamestop today. I guess I should start installing it.

Xenosaga isn't quite what Xenogears was. Less likable characters, and it pads the sheer visceral darkness of Xenogears down a tad.

Albeit, I hear Xenoblade is quite good.

don't worry Dr. I, too am a person who is behind in the games situation.
Doesn't help that my TV has blown, when I was on the final quest of New Vegas.
Arggghhh!!!
But still, I haven't played Red Dead Redemption yet, never mind Skyrim, Uncharted 3, Arkham City or any of the other great games that have been released recently.

Actually, I haven't even played Oblivion yet.

Red Dead Redemption is a fantastic game and captures the wild west superbly (I`m a big western fan as well) graphics are fantastic and the mission and storyline is also great. Its a 5 star game without a doubt.

I love the sound of all these games (have checked them out on wiki) I`m sure that I`ve played the Grandia game. I really liked the sound of Dragonquest VIII and Rogue Galaxy as noticed most of these games have that FFVII battle sequence. I always think of myself as an avid games player, but I`m surprised that I missed all these games. I looking to really play a lot of retro adventure games in the new year.

I`ve been reading the reviews of Skyrim and I`m very impressed, will certainly get this and the new Zelda game over the Christmas period.

debaserr 11-18-2011 12:19 PM

So, I've played about an hour or so of Skyrim since I got Zelda almost a week ago...
