Gayle McCormick has serious pipes of gold. If you can listen to her and not be impressed, you're probably tone deaf. The song below is a cover of the Shirelles' original hit; it's also been covered by the Carpenters, the Beatles, Cilla Black and even Ace goddamn Frehley.
Baby It's You was one of the earliest collaborations between Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the greatest songwriting team of the Sixties, with the possible exception of Lennon & McCartney.

Unfortunately, Phil Specter destroyed the original master tapes of Baby It's You, along with the master tapes of many his other recording sessions, while running amok in one of his LSD fueled freakouts in the late Sixties. Specter's act of "creative destruction" of the original master tapes has made it impossible, even for the most brilliant sound engineer, to remaster and restore the sound of those Specter produced songs to their original high fidelity glory.

Phil Spector is an all-around douchebag. A brilliant mind for his time, and one to be credited for many great things, but he's definitely a douchebag. I lost most of my respect for him when I found out what happened between him and Veronica ("Ronnie") Bennett, and how he treated her. Such a scumbag. Shame on him.

I just realized that I forgot to post my Song of the Day for yesterday, so I'll post something I heard on the radio that I hadn't heard in a rather long time. Nothing on the radio usually stands out to me - I usually don't listen to it at all but my other method of driving music failed me.

Make sure you're wearing headphones, turn it up, groove, relax. This song is a masterpiece. It reminds me of my freshman year in high school, mid-september. Later that fall I had auditioned for a Christmas play. I was denied.

SoTD - 05/28/13

Heart - "Crazy On You"

eh, what the hell, let's have some more Heart!

"Straight On"

Spoiler for Ann and Nancy are so groovy.:

"Magic Man"

Spoiler for Reminds me of someone I love, if you know what I mean.:

"Barracuda"

Spoiler for I'm pretty sure Ann & Nancy are the baddest bitches in the biz.:

"Little Queen"

Spoiler for So smooth.:

And the last Heart track for now; a beautiful cover of Aaron Neville's original.

"Tell it Like it Is"

Spoiler for Beautiful.:

And I know I promised a feature on Weird Al, but I'm not in the mood for a full feature, so here's a bunch of songs that make me laugh every time. I turn to Weird Al when I'm in serious need of cheering-up (that is, if Sparks don't do the trick).

First, a parody of Madonna's "Like a Virgin". I just about die every time I hear this song. It's just hilarious. Immature, yes. Dumb, of course. Funny as hell? YEAH.

The chainsaw gets me every time, but there are just dozens of weird little details everywhere throughout the video. It's a killer. Just watch.

Weird Al - "Like a Surgeon"

A parody of Michael Jackson's "Bad". This one is also hilarious.

"Fat"

Spoiler for "Yo, ding dong man, ding dong!":

This is a pastiche, or a style parody of DEVO. It's one of my dad's favorite songs. And it's also pretty much the story of my life.

"Dare to be Stupid"

Spoiler for "Get your mojo working now, I'll show you how - dare to be stupid!":

And a parody of James Brown's "Living in America" .... god, I love this song. I'm laughing so hard I can't even cope right now. I used to tease my grandfather behind his back with this song, because he had a pretty bad hernia. In the pants region.

LOL HERNIAS OF THE WEEK. Goddamn, Al.

"Living With a Hernia"

Spoiler for "Doctor says there ain't nothing to discuss, he tells me any day I might have to wear a dress!":

This next one is a parody of Coolio's "Gangster's Paradise". Also, Florence Henderson (otherwise known as Carol Brady).

"Amish Paradise"

Spoiler for "Tonight we're going to party like it's 1699.":

I remember when this song was wildly popular. Some nerdy kid who sat next to me in my sophomore creative writing class was completely obsessed with it. Later on in life I realized I was white and nerdy, too. It's a parody of "Ridin' Dirty" by Chamillionaire.

"White and Nerdy"

Spoiler for "Even made a homepage for my dog, yo!":

This next track is a parody of Eminem's "Lose Yourself". And it's awesome. The lyrics are brilliant. I wish I had half of Al's creativity. He's a genius.

"Couch Potato"

Spoiler for "Next week on FOX watch "Lions Eat Christians"":

This is the last track I'm going to include for the day. Here's a brilliant parody of Aerosmith's "Living on the Edge". My father loves this song. I just about die every time I hear it, because it's so ridiculous. I love how "dysentery!" is sung throughout the chorus in the background.

"Livin' in the Fridge"

Spoiler for "If you can name the object in that baggie over there ...":

Now I'm off to partake in a Heart binge. What's next? We'll see.

So the other day I was driving home and this came on. This song has always been incredibly unsettling to me, and it always reminds me of how much disgust I have for people who hurt children. I don't particularly like children, I don't ever want them, but I don't believe anyone ever has a reason to hurt them.

In my opinion, this is some of Pat Benatar's best work. It always sends shivers up my spine, brings tears to my eyes, and just makes me feel. Anyone who abuses anyone or any creature should be burned alive. No excuses.

Love and pain become one and the same in the eyes of a wounded child.

Pat Benatar - "Hell is For Children"

My love for Pat Benatar began when I was about 14. She is such a role model. She is a powerful woman with a luscious voice, and she knows how to rock. Her speaking voice is a little gross and gravelly, but her entire being is beautiful.

I'm not really ready for a feature on Pat, so here's a few of my favorites.

This next song will always remind me of sitting in my grandma's basement listening to "Crimes of Passion" on an 8-track cassette. The player switched channels a few times, effectively scaring the hell out of me, but left a lasting impression and a pretty cool memory.

"You Better Run"

Spoiler for She's so cute/terrifying.:

A lesser-known track that I'd put on a bunch of mix discs in high school. I still think it's a well-written, interesting track.

"Evil Genius"

Spoiler for It's like a darker version of Sparks' "Talent is an Asset"...:

Pat's first album "In the Heat of the Night" will always remind me of the summer of '07. It still remains one of my favorite listens in the summer. At night. Wow, could I possibly be any more redundant and typical? Anyway.

"If You Think You Know How to Love Me"

Spoiler for So pretty.:

Many wounds from heartaches were gently nursed to this track -

"Fire and Ice"

Spoiler for Still gives me the shivers.:

I suppose with any entry where someone mentions Pat Benatar, you've got to throw in Deborah Harry, the vixen of Blondie. I adore her a little more than Pat; Deb's just got more of an edge. I guess I'll throw in a few Blondie tracks for ultimate babeitude.

This one's a cover of "Denise" by Randy & The Rainbows, just gender-swapped. Debbie's so pretty, it makes me want to cry.

"Denis"

And here's a cover of Buddy Holly's original raver.

"I'm Gonna Love You Too"

Spoiler for swooooon:

And while criminally overplayed, I still think this is one of the grooviest things that ever happened.

"Rapture"

Spoiler for The brass really did me in.:

But wait, remember when this happened? (It's a mashup of "Riders on the Storm" and "Rapture"!)

Blondie/The Doors - "Rapture Riders"

Spoiler for Still love this.:

Here's some more cute rock chicks. I'm still totally in love with these girls. Jane Wiedlin had the pleasure of working with Sparks in the early 80s. She was the president of a Los Angeles-based fan club, and wrote a letter to the bros Mael. In return, they asked her to cut a couple tracks with them. But first, my favorite track by The Go-Go's.

"You Thought"

I remember playing (and overplaying) my "Beauty and the Beat" cassette years ago. This song actually did keep me up all night once, as it was spinning through my head and subliminally keeping me awake.

"You Can't Walk in Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep)" (LIVE)

Spoiler for "You smashed your windows bit by bit...":

Some more live footage of these badass ladies:

"Tonight" (LIVE)

Spoiler for "Get dressed up and messed up, blow our cares away...":

And more, because now I'm totally hooked. They're coming to Seattle soon, by the way. I'd love to see them (hint, hint). This track will always remind me of being a young (and jealous) girl.

"How Much More" (LIVE)

Spoiler for Belinda is so adorable!:

Anyway, back to Jane. Jane wrote this track. It's probably my most favorite song from that album.

"Automatic" (LIVE)

Spoiler for Drums and bass. DRUMS. AND. BASS. JANE. WIEDLIN.:

So when Jane hooked up with Ron and Russell Mael (Sparks), this happened. And it was totally dumb. I can't find the other song, but it was a sleeper called "Lucky Me, Lucky You" (though the lyrics on that were substantially better).

"Cool Places"

(But I bet Jane got to sleep with Russell, so the stupid song was totally worth it.)

Here's something similarly stupid from the 80s. You'll recognize this group from the Square Pegs theme song, though I'm convinced that everyone knows this stupid song anyway. Patty Donahue always reminded me of my old friend Sofie. (I'm so sorry, but they could be twins.)

The Waitresses - "I Know What Boys Like"

Spoiler for Patty died from lung cancer.:

Patty also sort of looks like Sharona Alperin.

Might as well throw this 80s track in there, for good measure. At some point in my life I knew all the lyrics to this (in German).

Nena - "99 Luftballons"

Spoiler for It's a lot more charming in its native language.:

Well, that about does it for me. Oh, wait. I heard this on the radio earlier, and almost forgot how happy it made me when I was much younger. It had been a really long time since I'd heard it, so I turned it up. People stared, but I didn't give a damn. When Paul McCartney is on the radio, you turn that shit up.

Wings - "Band on the Run"

Thanks for writing up Blondie, my favorite '70s pop group. Deborah Harry had a star quality that got her noticed on the New York scene even when she was a waitress at Max's Kansas City. Andy Warhol, Patti Smith, Lou Reed and other A-lists regular at Max's were mesmerized by the sassy and seductive Ms. Harry even when she was serving them drinks and dinner.

When Madonna first appeared on the NYC dance club scene in the late '70s, fans and critics alike wrote her off as another Deborah Harry wannabe. Unlike Madonna, Deborah Harry was able to deliver the goods in a live show without lip syncing pre-recorded vocals; or bumping & grinding with an entourage of male dancers. Deborah had charisma, while Madonna manufactured it.

Former Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham once said "Had Deborah Harry been six inches taller, she would have been the highest paid runway model of the era and Blondie would have never happened."

Hey, MB, just checking in. Ki and I have been on a bit of a hiatus since we don't have wifi in our new apartment yet. (But I've been out and about stealing it elsewhere since I realized I needed a second job, so the search is on yet again.) However, many sick grooves have been felt as I've gotten back in touch with my vinyl collection (and my beautiful black babies are surely happy to see me again, let me tell you - they've been hiding in bins for the past year and I couldn't possibly be any more apologetic).

I'm also working on a novel in my spare time.

So here's some music I've been grooving to recently. I usually post what I'm listening to on Facebook, in the form of photos, and anyone's free to add me (just don't get too friendly or Ki will give you the death glare and fart on your pillow).

The other day I was drunkenly (well, not drunkenly, but ... buzzed) grooving to Jefferson Airplane. "Surrealistic Pillow" was a huge part of my adolescence and I just can't deny this song's lyrical value.

Jefferson Airplane - "3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds"

Take me to a circus tent, where I can easily pay my rent, and all the other freaks will share my cares....

There's also been some of the fabulous Pat Benatar in my listening experience. I've loved her since I was young. Not many people really cared for the "Precious Time" album, but holy shit, this is a gem.

Pat Benatar - "Fire and Ice"

And I'll throw in some Genesis for good measure, since "Abacab" has never fully left my consciousness as a fabulous album.

Genesis - "Me and Sarah Jane"

And my favorite ...

Genesis - "Dodo/Lurker"

That's all for me for now. I've got stuff to do. All the best to you crazy people; we'll meet again soon.

Likewise! Nice weather we're having lately, right?

Since I'm still around I'll throw in a couple tracks I've heard and loved today.

Steely Dan - "Doctor Wu"

Beatles - "Baby's in Black"

Just a quick update; my memoir is coming along slowly but I am well determined to write it (and hopefully fulfill my lifelong dream of actually publishing my writing). On the hunt for a new job because part-time gigs are a waste of time in this day and age.

A couple songs that have been rolling through my brain today (but I haven't actually heard in a while) -

Bobby Fuller - "I Fought the Law"

T. Rex - "Rabbit Fighter"

Spoiler for Marc Bolan is my eternal source of agony.:

Genesis - "Alone Tonight"

Spoiler for I listened to "Duke" twice that night.:

Journey - "Feeling That Way/Anytime"

(This song will always remind me of an insanely stoned 3-block drive from a duplex I used to live in, to a nearby convenience store. I'll never forget the odd smell of the Pontiac Sunbird(?) when it sat in the sun all morning.)

Spoiler for I think I underestimated my intoxication that day.:

I was playing this single the other day - I don't know why I have the 7" vinyl but whatever, my life is full of surprises. It just sounded really good. God damn it, it's so good.

Def Leppard - "Foolin'"

Spoiler for Oh my god.:

That same day, this song rolled into and through my head as I was dying from the heat (in spite of our fabulous new fans) upstairs in our apartment.

Billy Idol - "Hot in the City"

Spoiler for Billy's kind of a turd but I love him.:

Hopefully, eventually I'll have more to post, more time, more resources, etc. For now this will do. Besides, I've been dusting off some LPs I haven't touched in years so perhaps the lack of internet in our apartment is a good thing.

The other day I had John Lennon's "Imagine" LP on the turntable. This song has always really stood out to me but I never realized that it perfectly expresses my feelings toward most people I know (though this song was written for Paul McCartney).

John Lennon - "How Do You Sleep?"

I guess I'll have a little more of John in this thread while I've got time.

"Instant Karma"

Spoiler for Better get yourself together, darlin':

"Cold Turkey"

I have struggled with multiple addictions throughout my life. This song stabs me through the psyche every time.

Spoiler for Please make me well. I'll promise you anything, get me out of this hell.:

Also I just found this and I'm crying a little; I love this song and never knew John recorded it at some point.

"Be My Baby"

Spoiler for John Lennon was a pretty rotten person but he does make me swoon.:

This song will always give me shivers. In part because I feel there needs to be a revolution (it's been a long time coming, right?) but mostly because I realize the impossibility of a bunch of people giving a damn about anything.

"Power to the People"

Spoiler for Right on.:

Anyway, branching off from John, this song by the Monochrome Set has been running in and out of my head for a few days. I sort of forgot about it for a while and then it came back to me in the shower.

The Monochrome Set - "Eine Symphonie des Grauens"

Spoiler for I'm dead and dank and rotten.:

What a great voice on that lead vocalist. I don't know much about the Monochrome Set, but they're in my mental list of artists I need to get into. Speaking of which ....

A long time ago I discovered Suede. I realized the lead singer's voice had a striking similarity to Russell Mael when he was in his prime. Real quick, here's one of their best known tracks.

"Animal Nitrate"

And something I actually just discovered minutes ago but surprisingly enjoyed.

Suede - "Beautiful Ones"

Spoiler for Get a load of this stuff, man.:

Oh, what do you know? Suede has a new album this year, called "Bloodsports". I'll post it here as sort of a bookmark/note to myself to get into it later.

Suede - "Bloodsports" (FULL ALBUM)

During my temp assignment at a warehouse I was talking with this aging punker dude and loosely mentioned the creepy sound of early Human League. Anyone familiar with this track, or is everyone too afraid to listen because I said "Human League" and all of a sudden you've got visions of "Don't You Want Me"? No, seriously, listen to this. This isn't 80s cheesepop. This is grand.

This is Kraftwerk-esque. And it's cool as hell.

Human League - "Being Boiled"

Spoiler for Little people, like your offspring, boiled alive for some god's stocking.:

But if you want to hear something REALLY creepy, here's the "early version" of the song. It's much darker, and honestly, I prefer it to the polished version above. This is what I'd expect from some kind of awful horror film, and since I'm alone in the house I do think I'm going to stop listening before I become too paranoid (I made it about 52 seconds!).

"Being Boiled" (demo)

A couple more things that make my skin crawl and I can't explain why:

1) The quiet space noises at the end of this song. It makes me want to throw myself out of a damn window. It's all groovy til about 2:55 and then it's a nightmare.

Steve Miller Band - "Fly Like an Eagle"

Spoiler for 2:55-3:20 - JESUS CHRIST WHY WHY WHHHYYYYY:

2. I spent at least 20 years of my life repressing the memory of this, until I found it again some time ago. I don't know why, but it makes me just sick to my stomach. I just ... I can't. This is horrifying. I didn't even click it on youtube, I just copied the link because it just freaks me out.

Philip Glass - "Geometry of Circles"

Spoiler for This is why an entire generation of children are desperately in need of therapy:

I think that's all for me tonight. I'm heading out because this empty house is making me freak out! (I can't wait til Ki gets home.)
